About

Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, located in Yobe State, Nigeria, was established in May 1993 by the Federal Government to enhance the quality of technical education in the state. The inception of the polytechnic was a direct response to the creation of Yobe State and the state’s urgent need for improved educational infrastructure, particularly in technical and vocational fields.

History

The establishment of Federal Polytechnic Damaturu began with a decision by the Yobe State Government to create a state polytechnic in Damaturu in late 1992. Shortly after, the Federal Government announced its intention to establish a federal polytechnic in the same location. The Federal Polytechnic Damaturu was officially established by the Federal Polytechnics (Amendment No.2) Decree of 1993.

The Yobe State Government handed over the site of the former Government College Damaturu and the adjacent phase II of the Yobe State Government Secretariat to the Federal Ministry of Education for the polytechnic’s use. Initially, the institution started with six academic departments, which have since expanded to five schools comprising twelve academic departments.

Governance and Development

A special task force was constituted by the Honourable Minister of Education on April 20, 1994, to facilitate the polytechnic’s swift take-off. The task force provided essential facilities, including renovated classrooms, offices, residential quarters, furniture, academic facilities, and a 500 KVA generator. The first Governing Council was appointed in 2001, led by Chief John N. Kum.mnj.

Staffing

The recruitment of the initial senior staff took place on September 15, 1994, by the task force, resulting in the hiring of 63 senior academic and non-academic staff. Additionally, 312 junior staff were recruited to support various divisions and units. Currently, staffing is managed by the Management Committee of the institution, the Junior Staff Appointment and Promotion Committee (JSAPC), and the Senior Staff Appointment and Promotion Committee (SSAPC) of the Council.

Student Admissions

The polytechnic commenced lectures on October 2, 1995, with 223 students enrolled in Preliminary National Diploma courses in various fields. Over time, it has grown to offer a wide range of National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programs.
