About Sheraton Hotels

Sheraton Hotels traces its origins to 1933 when Harvard classmates Ernest Henderson and Robert Moore purchased the Continental Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. By 1937, they had acquired the Stonehaven Hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts, marking the beginning of their hotel chain, named after the Sheraton Hotel in Boston to avoid the expense of changing its large, illuminated sign.

The brand expanded rapidly, purchasing Boston’s Copley Plaza Hotel in 1941 and becoming the first hotel chain listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1945. Sheraton’s international expansion began in 1949 with acquisitions in Canada, and continued with the Eppley Hotel Company in 1956, Matson Lines hotels in Hawaii in 1959, and the first hotels outside North America in Israel and Venezuela during the early 1960s. By 1965, the 100th Sheraton property, the Sheraton-Boston Hotel, had opened.

In 1968, the multinational conglomerate ITT acquired Sheraton, which then became ITT Sheraton. The brand achieved another milestone in 1985 by being the first Western company to manage a hotel in China. In 1992, ITT Sheraton established its Luxury Collection, including prestigious properties like The St. Regis in New York City. This collection expanded further in 1994 with the acquisition of the Italian CIGA chain.

Sheraton introduced the Four Points by Sheraton brand in 1995 to cater to the mid-scale market. In 1998, Starwood Hotels & Resorts acquired ITT Sheraton, leading to significant renovations and brand expansion. Finally, in 2016, Marriott International purchased Starwood, making the combined entity the world’s largest resort company.
