About Us

The Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) is a government-owned enterprise dedicated to managing and operating Nigeria’s communication satellites. With a primary mission of driving socio-economic growth, NIGCOMSAT provides satellite-based services to Nigeria and the global market, contributing to the nation’s digital transformation and connectivity.

Historical Background

Established in 2006 under the Federal Ministry of Communications Technology, NIGCOMSAT marked a turning point in Nigeria’s technological development by committing to space technology as a tool for national advancement. In 2007, Nigeria launched its first communication satellite, NIGCOMSAT-1, aboard a Chinese Long March 3B rocket. As the first African nation to own a communication satellite, Nigeria made significant strides in broadband internet, telephony, and broadcasting services.

However, the satellite experienced a power failure in 2008 due to a fault in its solar arrays and was subsequently de-orbited. Despite this setback, Nigeria remained undeterred. In December 2011, NIGCOMSAT-1R was launched to replace the original satellite. With improved technology, it resumed services for broadband internet, telemedicine, e-learning, disaster management, and more, expanding coverage to parts of Europe and Asia.

Since then, NIGCOMSAT has broadened its service portfolio, strengthened Nigeria’s ICT infrastructure, and championed innovation in satellite communications. The company continues to play a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s space ambitions and fostering socio-economic progress.
