About us

The Federal Medical Centre, Abuja was established on the 7th of June, 2012 but was fully commissioned by the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, on 28th of January, 2013.

The hospital project arose from the China-Africa cooperation forum, Beijing Summit, held on the 2nd to 21st of June, 2008. The government of the People’s Republic of China offered to assist Nigeria in building and equipping one Comprehensive Hospital and four rural Primary Schools. In this regard, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria signed a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Ministry of Health. This understanding was re-affirmed by the National Planning Commission which buttressed the fact that the 150-bed Hospital will replace the congested then Federal Staff Hospital in Garki II, thereby expanding the scope of health care delivery system in the Federal Capital Territory.

As part of the agreement, 4.85 hectares of land was acquired while the Federal Ministry of Health provided necessary infrastructural facilities which include potable water, Electricity and temporary access routes. The Ministry also assisted the Chinese Engineers to secure residency permits and accommodated them for two years. The Chinese Embassy concluded the stone laying ceremony for the takeoff of the facility on 20th May 2010. The hospital project was completed within two years. On handing over, the Federal Staff Hospital, Garki II, relocated to this new site on 7th June 2012.

Despite her unique and natural position at the Nation’s Capital Territory, we had to contend with the initial challenges of infrastructure and inadequate manpower. However, with the commitment of the Pioneer members of management and dedication of highly professional staff, the Medical Centre has recorded unprecedented growth and development. Today, we are now a Postgraduate Training Centre with Major Institutional divisions and Clinical Departments as well as subspecialties.

At the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, the patient is at the core of our services and his/her satisfaction is our prime responsibility.
