Brief History of the Hospital

Welcome to the Federal Medical Centre, formerly known as the Nigerian Railway Hospital. Since our inception on November 23, 1964, under the auspices of the esteemed Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we have been a steadfast pillar of healthcare excellence.

Originally established to cater to the medical needs of Nigerian Railway Corporation workers and their families, our institution has transformed over the years into a beacon of hope and healing for all, transcending the challenges of time and history.

Amidst the turmoil of the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, our hospital bravely served as an annex to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), providing vital care to wounded soldiers during their most critical moments.

In the following years, from 1984 to 1995, we functioned as a referral center for parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Transport and Aviation, extending free medical services not only to railway staff but also to the wider community.

Under the visionary leadership of General Gumel as Transport Minister in 1996, the concept of commercializing our hospital was conceived. Operating as a business entity from 1996 to 2004, we navigated the complexities of financial sustainability while never wavering in our dedication to patient care.

Yet, amidst the winds of change ushered in by the new millennium, the prospect of privatization loomed. Our devoted staff, concerned that privatization would compromise access to our essential services, raised their voices in opposition. Through tireless advocacy led by then Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and the united voice of our community, the plans for privatization were halted, safeguarding our mission to serve all who seek our care.

On May 26th, 2004, a new chapter unfolded as the Federal Executive Council (FEC) sanctioned our transformation into a Federal Medical Centre. This pivotal moment, formalized on January 31st, 2005, marked a renewed commitment to excellence and accessibility in healthcare delivery.

Today, as a Federal Medical Centre, we remain steadfast in our founding principles of compassion, quality, and accessibility. With a legacy steeped in service and a vision for the future, we stand ready to serve our community with unwavering dedication and integrity. Welcome to the Federal Medical Centre, where healing begins and hope thrives.
